Day 1* Trip start Day 2 and 3* Sespe Wilderness adventure
Wake up to freshly brewed coffee and a hearty cowboy breakfast! Adventure out for a horseback ride through spectacular countryside, along oak-shaded trails; traverse sparkling streams under blue California skies; swim or fish for rainbow trout along the way. Enjoy a nature hike, relax with a picnic lunch in the tranquility of the untouched Sespe Wilderness.
One of the highlights on our springtime pack-trips is seeing the variety of wildflowers our backcountry has to offer. The California Poppy and Indian Paintbrush are just a few species of the abundant types of wildflowers you will see while riding the trail through Purple Sage. You will be submersed in an array of vegetation and an unforgettable aroma: Manzanita, Mountain Lupine, Birdseye Gilia, Blue Curls Bush Monkey Flower, California Poppies Cream Cups, Indian Paintbrush and Mountain Violets to name some of them.
For those who like to take photos, this is a wonderful chance to capture a unique blend of California flora and fauna from horseback.
Ridge tops of six thousand feet such as the Great Topa Topa are just part of the everyday scenery on the Sespe River. Explore old homesteads at a place called Willets, where Johny Cash used to hold up with his pals to get away and enjoy good company and solitude.
Condors, California Black Bears and Coastal Blacktail Deer are just some of the critters we find along the way. We have three kinds of foxes and many types of hawks, Golden- and Bald Eagles.
After a day in the saddle, stay over-night at the Wilderness camp on the second and third day, enjoy local cuisine and dinners prepared on the open fire. Rekindle the Cowboy spirit with an evening around the campfire in the peace and solitude of the back-country.
The Sespe Hot Springs is rated number one in California for its natural remoteness and undisturbed state. They don't call it a hot spring for nothing; it is hot! Decide for yourself what temperature is comfortable for you, as you progress closer to the source of the spring where the clean running water gets progressively hotter. Cattle operations, both new and old, are a common sight as we pack through Old California with our mules loaded. Old homesteads are passed along the way, where settlers made quite a go of backcountry life, raising cattle and sheep.

Santa Barbara

Our meeting point and start of your adventure, a premier resort in the Western U.S. on the shores of the Pacific Ocean - American Riviera - a romantic Spanish-style city - endless beaches - steeply-rising mountains - pristine vineyards and ranches in the adjacent Santa Ynez Valley - untouched back-country wilderness in the Los Padres National Forest beyond. Santa Barbara is located about 90 miles (140 km) WNW of Los Angeles, along the Pacific coast. This stretch of coast along southern Santa Barbara County is often referred to as the "American Riviera" because its geography and Mediterranean climate are reminiscent of the French and Italian Riviera coastline along the Mediterranean.
The Santa Ynez Mountains, an east-west trending range, rise dramatically behind the city, with several peaks exceeding 4,000 feet (1,200 m). Covered with chaparral and with sandstone outcrops, they make a famously scenic backdrop to the town.
Sometimes, perhaps once every three years, snow falls on the mountains, but it rarely stays for more than a few days. Nearer to town, and directly east and adjacent to Mission Santa Barbara, is a hill known locally as the "Riviera," traversed by "Alameda Padre Serra" (shortened APS), "Father Serra's pathway." The hillside, made accessible by the advent of the automobile early in the 20th century, is now built with relatively expensive homes.
A spectacularly beautiful area looking south toward the Pacific and the Channel Islands and having sunrise to sunset views, Santa Barbara became the winter destination for the titans of post-Civil War America. Private railroad cars clustered on the sidings at Santa Barbara. The Potter Hotel overlooking Santa Barbara's West Beach was a world renowned resort.
Owners of industry visited Santa Barbara and chose Santa Barbara hillside locations for their grand estates. Others preferred the beach and built palatially there, from Sandyland Cove, Padaro Lane, the city beaches, and west to what is now Goleta.
Located 60 miles south east of Santa Barbara - above the scenic Ojai Valley on a picturesque, remote mountain plateau more than 3,000 feet above sea-level - the starting point for the deluxe serviced back-country pack-trips into the Sespe Wilderness in the Los Padres National Forest.
Montecito and SummerlandRenowned communities adjacent to the city of Santa Barbara - beach rides along the spectacular Pacific Ocean coastline and/or trail rides enjoying breath-taking views of the American Riviera and the Channel Islands.
Return To FreedomThe American Wild Horse Sanctuary - a scenic drive north of Santa Barbara along the magnificent Pacific coast line or through the Santa Ynez Mountains to the Santa Ynez Valley - observe Mustangs in their natural herd group.
